Kick-off for the world of the Roaring Twenties in BABYLON BERLIN

Berlin, 19 May 2016. Babylon Berlin is off and running, with German star director Tom Tykwer (“Sense 8”, “Cloud Atlas”, “Run Lola Run”), Hendrik Handloegten (“Good Bye Lenin!”) and Achim von Borries (“Alone in Berlin”) helming the project as director/writer trio. The 16 hours of the path-breaking joint serial project of X Filme, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film are scheduled for 180 days of shooting against the gritty backdrops of Roaring Twenties Berlin. Shooting will end in December 2016, delivery for 2017.

The main cast of Babylon Berlin (16xone hour) includes Volker Bruch (“Generation War”) as Gereon Rath and Liv Lisa Fries (“NSU German History X”) as Charlotte; the sterling talent will be completed by multiple awarded Matthias Brandt (“Counterparts”), Hannah Herzsprung (“The Reader”, “Four Minutes”), Karl Markovics (Academy Award winning “The Counterfeiters"), Lars Eidinger (“Clouds of Sils Maria”), Sebastian Urzendowski (“NSU German History X”, “Borgia”) and Christian Friedel (“13 Minutes”) among 250 other actors and more than 5000 extras.

Original locations in Berlin as well as Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and the new Babelsberg Studio set “Neue Berliner Strasse” will deliver a visually authentic background for 1920s Berlin. The street with several dozen facades, designed by Babylon Berlin Production Designer Uli Hanisch (“Perfume – The Story of a Murderer”, “A Hologram for the King”) allows hundreds of different camera angles from Bourgeois Berlin, glittering Art Nouveau shopping centers to dark, dirty and dangerous backyard corners.

Based on the bestselling novels by Volker Kutscher, the story follows the adventures of police inspector Gereon Rath and delivers an atmospheric portrayal of Berlin as the most exciting city in the world at that time, a hotbed of drugs and politics, murder and art, emancipation and extremism.

Sky will broadcast the series in 2017 and ARD in 2018. As co-producer, Beta Film will handle the worldwide distribution of the series, which has already been presold to all major Scandinavian public broadcasters with numerous further international deals in final negotiations.

The big-budget series will be produced by X Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film. The chief editors of Babylon Berlin are Christine Strobl, Sascha Schwingel, and Carolin Haasis (ARD Degeto), Gebhard Henke and Caren Toenissen (WDR), and Marcus Ammon and Frank Jastfelder (Sky Deutschland). The producers for X Filme are Stefan Arndt, Uwe Schott, and Michael Polle, co-producers for Beta Film are Jan Mojto and Dirk Schürhoff.

Babylon Berlin is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Creative Europe Media, the NRW Film and Media Foundation and the German Motion Picture Fund.
