Beta’s THE TOWER beats Champions League with exceptional ratings in Germany

Munich,  5 October 2012. The epic East German drama The Tower has scored truly exceptional ratings in Germany. The mini-series, set against the backdrop of the last seven years of Communist Germany before the wall came down, reached as double prime time winner on Oct 3. and 4. up to 7.5 million viewers on the public broadcaster ARD. Running against powerful programs such as Champions League and RTL’s “Cobra 11” (“Crash Time”), The Tower got an average market share of 20,5 percent, which is the second highest rated fictional program in Germany this year. Especially the younger viewership (14-49) was thrilled by Nico Hofmann’s teamWorx production. For part two of the drama series, the market share increased to 12.5 percent, which is twice as the ARD’s average share in this target group. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the mini-series as “milestone of television history”. The Tower (2x90’), based on the bestselling novel by Uwe Tellkamp (German Book Award 2008), was produced by teamWorx in co-production with MDR and ARD Degeto as well as BR, NDR, WDR, SWR und RBB for ARD in association with Beta Film. Beta Film will introduce The Tower to international buyers on the TV trade fare MipCom, which starts Sunday in Cannes.
