Munich, 1st February 2005. The international sales company Beta Cinema has worldwide distribution rights to "One Day in Europe", in competition at the Berlinale 2005. This episodic film is the second feature film by director Hannes Stöhr, whose first feature „Berlin Is in Germany" won the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale four years ago. "One Day in Europe" will have its world premiere on the 12th of February. Also new in Beta Cinema’s line-up for 2005 are “The Wedding Party?, “The Fisherman and His Wife – Why Women Never Get Enough? and “The Lives of Others?. The internationally celebrated box office hit "Downfall" written and produced by Bernd Eichinger and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, which was nominated last week for the Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film, will be screened in the section "German Cinema" along with Mennan Yapo’s thriller "Soundless" starring Joachim Król and Nadja Uhl (“Twin Sisters?).
The German-Spanish coproduction “One Day in Europe? from Moneypenny Filmproduktion and Filmnova, La Coruña is an episodic film telling four colorful and light-hearted stories about quirky characters and the amusing misunderstandings that cross-cultural communication often provides. “They are short stories in which an incredible amount happens?, explains director and screenplay author Hannes Stöhr. “It was important for me to tell the stories so that they would be understood all over Europe.? The thread that runs through all the stories is the soccer Champion’s League final between Galatasaray Istanbul and Deportivo La Coruña. The leading roles are played by Megan Gay, Florian Lukas, Erdal Yildiz, Peter Scherer, Boris Arquier and Rachida Brakni. In addition to the world premiere on the 12th of February, there will also be press screenings on the 11th and 12th of February.
Beta Cinema has also acquired the international sales rights to “The Wedding Party?, directed by Dominic Deruddere, who’s inventive and original 2001 farce "Everybody's Famous" made the Oscar shortlist for best foreign-language film three years ago. Determined to get his money's worth at his son's wedding, Herman Walzer, played by Armin Rohde ("The Sound of Thunder"), books the best restaurant in the best location he can find. But the reception is soon turned into a battlefield after a minor incident escalates into a full-scale hostage siege. “The Wedding Party? is a coproduction by the producers of "The Experiment" and "The Alzheimer Case" and is based on the famous comic book "Lune de Guerre" by Hermann & Van Hamme. The film is now in post-production and will be released in Germany this year by Constantin Film.
New in Beta Cinema’s line-up as well is „The Fisherman and His Wife – Why Women Never Get Enough? directed by Doris Dörrie and starring Alexandra Maria Lara (who played Hitler’s secretary in "Downfall"), Christian Ulmen ("Berlin Blues") and Simon Verhoeven ("Girls on Top 2"). Based loosely on the classic fairy tale, it is an enchanting and modern tale that portrays two discontented wives whose greedy ambitions get them into a lot of trouble. Doris Dörrie, who has won several national film awards, also directed "Naked" (2002) which was nominated for Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion. "The Fisherman and His Wife - Why Women Never Get Enough" will be released by Constantin Film as well.
The third new title Beta Cinema has in Berlin is “The Lives of Others?, the feature film debut of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who summoned a remarkable star cast for this project. Martina Gedeck ("Mostly Martha"), Ulrich Mühe (“Funny Games?), Ulrich Tukur (“Amen?) and Sebastian Koch ("The Tunnel") are playing the leading roles in the thrilling story about trust and treason during the last years of the Communist regime in East Germany. State Security bugs the apartment of a famous author. A Stasi officer, loyal to the party line, is charged with the surveillance, but with time the intelligence agent becomes the author’s silent accomplice. The film music will be composed by Oscar-winner Gabriel Yared (“The English Patient?). Produced by Wiedemann & Berg Filmproduktion, "The Lives of Others" is in post-production.
