Cannes, May 21, 2012. Beta Cinema has secured the worldwide rights to THE HAPPY PRINCE, the directorial debut of Rupert Everett (AN IDEAL HUSBAND, MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING, HYSTERIA).
Based on his own script, Rupert Everett will also star as Oscar Wilde alongside a stellar cast featuring Academy Award Winner Colin Firth (THE KING’S SPEECH), Academy Award Nominee Emily Watson (BREAKING THE WAVES), Academy Award Nominee Tom Wilkinson (MICHAEL CLAYTON), and Edward Fox (GHANDI). Further cast is to be confirmed soon.
THE HAPPY PRINCE is the untold story of the last days in the tragic times of Oscar Wilde. A person who observes his own failure with ironic distance and regards the car crash of his life with detachment and humor. The film is a comedy with tragic undertones in the tradition of the best of English tragedies.
Martin Ruhe (CONTROL, THE AMERICAN, HARRY BROWN) will serve as DoP, Christoph Kanter (THE WHITE RIBBON, CACHE, LUDWIG II) will be in charge of the production design. German distribution is handled by Concorde Filmverleih.
THE HAPPY PRINCE is a German-British-Italian co-production of cine plus Filmproduktion and Bavaria Pictures with Robert Fox Ltd. and Bavaria Media Italia. While shooting is scheduled for summer 2013, Beta Cinema has already started pre-sales at Cannes Film Festival.
