This compelling modern-day adaptation of Wagner's fable of love and
redemption from Barcelona's Teatre Liceu features one of the great Wagner
singers of our time in the lead role, Peter Seiffert. He plays alongside
Petra Maria Schnitzer as Elisabeth and Béatrice Uria-Monzon as Venus.
Sebastian Weigle, the Liceu's principal conductor, gives a "visibly
inspired" performance, as the Spanish daily ABC wrote. Director Robert
Carsen turns the Wartburg into a chic big-city art gallery, and the work's
"Minnesänger" into painters, thus shifting the work's message of salvation
towards a quest for artistic glory.
